Environmental Quality Incentives Program

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) was established in the 1996 Farm Bill to provide a voluntary conservation program for farmers and ranchers who face serious threats to soil, water, and related natural resources.  Nationally, it provides technical, financial, and educational assistance primarily in designated areas; half of it targeted to livestock, related natural resource concerns and the remainder to other significant conservation priorities.

Natural resource concerns for Wilkes County are as follows:

Primary Concern One:

WATER - Surface Water Quality - Animal Wastes

Primary Concern Two:

WATER - Surface Water Quality - Nutrients

Secondary Concern ONE:

SOILS - Soil Quality - Excessive Sheet/Rill Erosion

Secondary Concern TWO:

WATER - Ground Water Quality - Nutrients

Secondary Concern THREE:

ANIMALS - Habitat Quality - Loss or degradation of riparian habitat
