History of the Wilkes Soil & Water Conservation District

Wilkes County joined the multi-county Tri-Creek Soil and Water Conservation District in March, 1939 under provisions of Section 139-5 of the North Carolina Soil Conservation districts Law, 1937, G.S. 139.  The Tri-Creek Soil Conservation District was organized in Yadkin County mainly by the efforts of L.F. Brunfield, County Agent, and a small group of interested landowners to cover the watershed of three creeks in the southern section to the county.  Organization was completed and a charter of organization given by the Secretary of State, Thad Eure, on February 28, 1938.

Expansion was accomplished on March 1, 1939 to include all of Yadkin County, Surry County and Wilkes County. The vote for this expansion in Wilkes County was 322 for and 38 against.  Forsyth County joined the Tri-Creek Soil Conservation District on May 23, 1941.  The district was now comprised of Yadkin,Wilkes,Surry and Forsyth Counties.

By action of the Board of Supervisors of the Tri-Creek Soil Conservation District, the district was dissolved into single county districts and the Wilkes Soil and Water Conservation District was charted on August 29, 1961.

Today the board is governed by a five person board of supervisors, three of which are elected and two appointed.
